Primary 5

Dear Parent/Carer,

This letter is to share with you the main learning topics we will be covering in the first term of Primary 5.

Maths

In Maths, we will work daily on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.  We will complete a unit of work on place value and time. We will also complete a topic on Financial Education and money matters as our interdisciplinary topic. The skills your child will be learning and using in Maths this term include:

  • Recall of addition and related subtraction facts quickly, and accurately
  • Recall of multiplication and related division facts quickly, and accurately
  • Everyday contexts in which time is used and managing and calculating simple timetables
  • Manage money, compare costs and stick to a budget.

In class, we will practise these skills through lots of games and activities to reinforce the learning taking place.

Language:

In writing, we will be working on functional and personal pieces of writing. The main targets we will work on are based on VCOP, (vocabulary, connectives, openers and punctuation). In reading, we will be looking at fiction books and will focus on characters, setting and extending vocabulary.  Your child will also be taking part in Reading Rings in class to promote reading for enjoyment. Please continue to encourage and support your child to read as much and as often as possible. J

Our Interdisciplinary Learning topic this term is Money, Money, Money! This will cover learning across many areas including history, geography, ICT, technology and expressive arts.

In HWB, we will focus this term on physical wellbeing, in particular healthy food choices, looking at advertising and packaging. This will be also be supported through Harris Academy’s senior pupils delivering their Peer Education project this term. The first week was a great success and positive relationships were quickly established between P5 and the senior pupils.

We are learning French in class, conversation playing a major part of the learning. We will revise last session’s vocabulary and continue our money theme through a French Subway shop, encouraging role play and conversation, which is set up in our Shared Area.

As always, if you have any queries, please contact the school. I hope you find this information useful.

Many thanks,

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Carolyn Dammer
