Primary 1/2

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to the new school year. The children are settling well after the summer break and are getting to know their new classmates. The P1 children seem happy in their new class and the P2 children have been excellent role models and friends. We are enjoying getting to know your child better and we are all looking forward to a positive, happy and busy year!

Here is some information about our learning for this term:

Primary 1
We will be focussing on recognising, counting and writing the numbers 0-10 this term. We will also be looking at 2D shapes and  patterns
Primary 2
We will be focussing on recognising, writing and ordering numbers up to 100. We will be using the 100 square grid to practise counting to 100, counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, exploring number patterns and identifying odd and even numbers. We will continue working on addition bonds to 10 and 20.

Primary 1
Your child will be learning to recognise rhyming words and how many syllables make up a word. We will be reading lots of stories in class and we will be making regular visits to the library. Your child will be learning how to recognise, say and write sounds and we will be assessing all of the children over the next week or so for their readiness to start on our ‘Learning to Read’ programme.

Primary 2
Your child is continuing to learn to read and write during daily ‘Learning to Read’ times. Please can you try to read with your child every night and share your favourite stories with them.

Our topic this term will be Fairyland. Through this, the children will be engaged in writing, drama and art activities and they will have opportunities to be creative and to be involved in imaginative play. We will also be studying ‘The Rainbow Fish’ by Marcus Pfister to help encourage friendship and sharing amongst the class.

The children will be involved in the Aspire music lessons each Tuesday with Mr P McGregor. P1 and P2 children will be singing and learning about beat, rhythm, volume and tempo in a fun and active way.

For Health and Wellbeing, the children will be learning about the importance of having a healthy body, positive relationships with others and teamwork. Mr Malone will deliver weekly PE lessons with the focus being on core movement skills.

A gentle reminder:

Gym days are Tuesday and Thursday. Please can you ensure your child has a full gym kit in school at all times e.g. plain white or blue school t-shirt, dark shorts and indoor gym shoes. This will be left in class during term time and returned to you for freshening at the end of term. For safety, all jewellery must be removed (tape can be provided for earrings that cannot be taken out) and long hair should be tied up.

It would be helpful if your child could wear a polo shirt on gym days as shirts and ties are very tricky to get on and off.

Over the term, your child will be using paints, inks and chalk and, whilst I will do my best to keep mess to a minimum, please feel free to hand into school a paint shirt or smock to protect clothing further.

Please can you fill water bottles with plain water only. Children are encouraged, if possible, to bring in a healthy snack for morning break.

Diary bags should be brought into school each day but will not be handed back out on a Friday. Letters and forms will often be put in diary bags as well as reading books and diaries. Home work will be handed out every 4 weeks and will include a variety of tasks. On occasion, unfinished work from the school day will also be sent home.

Please can you try to ensure that all items of clothing are clearly labelled. The school lost property pile is already growing!

Thank you for your support and co-operation. Please, do not hesitate to contact the school if there is anything you would like to discuss further. You can also follow us on Twitter @stclementsP1_2 to see more about your child’s day.
